Sepsis Screening tools for Dental and GP Practices

Sepsis is continuing to kill 1000s of people and many deaths could be avoided with improved recognition. The difficulty is that people may present with a range of symptoms.  Also two people may have the same infection and one could develop Sepsis and one won’t. In order to help us the Sepsis Trust have developed a range of Screening Tools for different clinical environments.  The link for the complete list is here.  You will need to scroll down their page to find the links to the ones you need.

Whatever our clinical setting it’s important to consider Sepsis as a cause. Perhaps the most important question to have in mind when someone has a possible infection and is unwell is:-

“Could it be Sepsis?”

The list of screening tools includes specific tools for GP services, Dental, in-hospital plus out of hours.  There are specific tools for Primary Care both for General Practice and Dental, it’s worth noting that there are a few minor differences between the two sets of tools.  These have been broken down into 3 age groups:-  under 5s, 5-11 years and 12 and overs.

The tools are laid out as an easy to use flow chart, so they let you know what to look for and what to do.  Also on the paediatric charts they include the normal values to help you.

I also like the NICE Sepsis algorithms which you can find here, but i’s all about using a tool that works for you and your team.

If you have any questions or comments please add them in the box below or use my contact us form.

Thank you for reading and I look forward to hearing from you.
